Media Advisory - Congressman Shimkus to lead presentation at UISApril 25, 2005What: U.S. Representative John Shimkus will lead a presentation on bullying and harassment prevention legislation currently under consideration in Congress. A roundtable discussion and a question-and-answer session will follow the Congressman’s address. When & Where: Today -- 1:30 to 3 p.m., Brookens Auditorium, lower level of Brookens Library at UIS Details: H. R. 284, introduced in the 109th Congress by Shimkus and fellow Illinois Representative Danny Davis, would amend the Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act to specifically include bullying and harassment prevention programs and would require states, districts, and schools to prevent and appropriately respond to instances of bullying and harassment as part of school safety. The bill has been referred to the House Subcommittee on Education Reform. The National Education Association estimates that 160,000 children miss school every day because they are afraid of being attacked or intimidated by other students. The event is hosted by the Public Policy High School Initiatives program within UIS’ Center for State Policy and Leadership.
