UIS team wins ASCLS Student Bowl competition

SPRINGFIELD - A team of students from the University of Illinois at Springfield’s Clinical Laboratory Science program took first place honors in the Student Bowl competition held during the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science annual conference, April 12 to 14 in Springfield.
UIS fielded two teams in the competition, which included students from clinical laboratory science programs around the state. In the final round, UIS Team A defeated the team from Northern Illinois University to win the title.
Team A members were seniors Lindsay Dugan (captain), Mark Krohe, Jeff Wilson, Ben Pritchard, and Thomas Young (alternate). Team B members were Nikki Hemken, Crystal Mattingly, Amanda Schlisler, Shante Waller, and David Brown (alternate).
Students attending the ASCLS annual conference are able to take part in professional seminars, elect officials for the ASCLS-IL Student Forum, compete in the student bowl, and network with students in other laboratory science programs across the state. Faculty members in UIS’ CLS program are also active participants in the conference.
The American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science is the preeminent organization for clinical laboratory science practitioners in this country and vigorously promotes all aspects of practice, education, and management to ensure excellent, accessible, cost-effective laboratory services for consumers of health care.
The Clinical Laboratory Science program at UIS awards the bachelor of science degree. The curriculum features both broad‑based and selective learning experiences encompassing theory and practice in all areas of clinical laboratory science. Students who complete the program are eligible for certification by the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathology and the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel. The program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences.
