SPRINGFIELD - Music groups at the University of Illinois at Springfield will present their annual Spring Showcase Concert beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, April 29, in the Studio Theatre, located on the lower level of the Public Affairs Center on the UIS campus. Highlights will include the chorus performing songs from Japan and southern India, including a devotional song in Hindi taught to them by a student in the Computer Science program. The Chamber Ensemble will perform a ragtime selection and a Bartok suite based on peasant dances. The Band will perform classic and jazz pieces featuring several solos.

UIS Music is under the direction of Sharon Graf, assistant professor of ethnomusicology. Since its beginning in 2001, the program has developed and grown, and opportunities for campus musicians to demonstrate their skills continue to expand.

Notes Graf, “The Spring Showcase gives all our groups an opportunity to perform the music they have been working on throughout the spring semester.”

Admission is $6 and tickets are available at the Sangamon Auditorium Ticket Office, PAC level two, phone 206-6160, as well as at the door.  Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the UIS Music Student Merit Award ($5 from each ticket sold) and the Sangamon Auditorium Restoration Fund ($1 from each ticket sold).

Those unable to attend in person can watch the concert via live webcast at www.uis.edu/technology/uislive.html and on video (VHS and DVD formats) available through UIS’ Office of Electronic Media, phone 206-6799.

For more information about the spring concert or any musical program at UIS, contact Graf at 206-6570.
