  FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

UIS Pre-Law Center to host discussion with state Supreme Court justice

April 7, 2005

SPRINGFIELD - Illinois Supreme Court Justice Thomas Kilbride will be the featured speaker at a John Peter Altgeld Forum, presented by the Pre-Law Center at the University of Illinois at Springfield, from noon to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, in the Studio Theatre, on the lower level of the Public Affairs Center on the UIS campus.  The forum is presented free; however, advance registration is required.

Justice Thomas Kilbride

Justice Kilbride practiced law for 20 years in Rock Island, engaging in general practice including appeals, environmental law, labor law, employment matters, and other general civil and criminal matters.  He was elected to the Supreme Court of Illinois for the Third District in 2000.

Kilbride is a past volunteer lawyer and charter member of the Illinois Pro Bono Center.  He served as volunteer legal adviser for the Community Caring Conference, charter chairman of the Quad Cities Interfaith Sponsoring committee, and volunteer legal adviser to Quad City Harvest, Inc. He is also a past member of the Rock Island Human Relations Commission. Kilbride received a B.A. degree magna cum laude from St. Mary’s College in Winona, Minnesota, in 1978 and earned his law degree from Antioch School of Law in Washington, D.C., in 1981.

The Altgeld Forum is named in honor of the late lawyer, judge, and governor of Illinois (1892-96), best remembered for his decision to pardon the surviving defendants in the Haymarket trial of 1886 (on the grounds that they were unfairly convicted) as well as his refusal (subsequently overridden by President Grover Cleveland) to send federal troops to Chicago to break the Pullman strike of 1894. Today, Altgeld is viewed as one of the state’s most upright and heroic politicians.

For more information about the Altgeld Forum, contact either PLC Director Dennis Rendleman at 206-6324 or PLC Graduate Assistant Bukola Bello at 206-7826, or register to attend by e-mail at prelawcenter@uis.edu.

The Pre-Law Center at UIS provides a central resource for students interested in learning about law school options and careers in the legal profession. Services include advice in structuring undergraduate programs to meet future career needs, preparing for LSAT exams, and developing application essays.
