UIS to present lecture by nationally renowned sculptor

SPRINGFIELD - Nationally renowned sculptor Michael Dunbar will present a special Artist’s Lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 7, in Public Affairs Center conference room C/D, on campus at the University of Illinois at Springfield. The event is free and open to the public.

The lecture is in conjunction with “Machinist Studies,” an exhibit of Dunbar’s work on display through April 21 at UIS’ Visual Arts Gallery. The studies referred to in the title were initially conceived as models for Dunbar’s larger pieces.

Currently Art in Architecture coordinator for the state of Illinois, Dunbar earned the master’s degree in Community Arts Management at UIS in 1976.  In 1995, he co-founded the outdoor sculpture exhibition “Pier Walk” at Navy Pier in Chicago.  In addition to Navy Pier, his work is included in the collections of the Krasl Art Center in Saint Joseph, Michigan, and the Wandell Sculpture Garden in Urbana.

“We are very proud to have Michael’s extraordinary work on exhibit, and we are doubly proud that Michael is part of the heritage of this university,” noted UIS Chancellor Richard Ringeisen.
