SPRINGFIELD - The Office of Student Volunteers and Service Learning at the University of Illinois at Springfield and the Community Volunteer Center at Lincoln Land Community College will participate in National Volunteer Week, April 17 through 23, which this year focuses on the theme “Inspire by Example.”

Events will include a special Volunteer Recognition Breakfast at Lincoln Land on Friday, April 22, to celebrate and recognize volunteer efforts in the community.

Pat Robertson, director of Student Volunteers and Service Learning at UIS, noted, “The theme ‘Inspire by Example’ is especially apt because it truly reflects the power volunteers have to inspire the people they help, as well as to inspire others to serve.”

At UIS, a week of service dedicated to “giving back” to the campus community will focus on Cox Children’s Center.  Throughout the week, volunteers will provide a variety of services to the center, ranging from reading to the children and assisting them with art projects to spring clean-up efforts on the center’s playground and deck.

National Volunteer Week is sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation and Volunteer Center National Network. It is designed to recognize the contributions of volunteers across the U.S. and encourage others to join in the effort to solve serious problems through volunteering. National Volunteer Week was established in 1974, when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order designating an annual national celebration of volunteering.

For more information about the local program, call Betty McLean or Pat Robertson at 206-7828. For more information about National Volunteer Week, go to www.pointsoflight.org/programs/seasons/nvw/.
