Public radio WUIS adds top blues program to lineup

April 1, 2005

SPRINGFIELD - “Beale Street Caravan,” the weekly blues program broadcast from Memphis, Tennessee, to nearly two and a half million listeners worldwide, will join the Friday night lineup on WUIS (91.9 Springfield) and WIPA (89.3 Pittsfield) beginning April 8. The program will air Fridays at 8 p.m., immediately following “This American Life.”

“Beale Street Caravan” is a one-hour program featuring the world’s best blues artists recorded live in intimate performances. Hosted by Pat Mitchell, the show features some of the city’s great blues venues, such as Huey’s and the Rum Boogie; events like the W.C. Handy Blues Awards; and festivals, including the Telluride Blues and Brews Festival, the North Atlantic Blues Festival, and the King Biscuit Blues Festival.

The April 8 program will feature “Women and Blues” with Memphis native Cybill Shepherd; the Bo-Keys, session players who formed an instrumental group, performing at Pianos in New York City; and Bobby Rush and Alvin “Youngblood” Hart performing at Memphis’ New Daisy Theater.

Future shows include (April 20) featured artist Johnny Rawls, guest artist Larry Johnson, and featured host Cybill Shepherd; and (April 27) finalists from the Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge.

More information about the WUIS programming schedule is available at www.wuis.org.
