Office Depot helps fund tool for students with disabilities

April 19, 2004

SPRINGFIELD - The Office of Disability Services at the University of Illinois at Springfield has received a $1,000 gift from Office Depot to purchase Academic Study Organizers, a tool that assists students, especially those with disabilities, to develop effective time management, organizational, and educational strategies.

Karla Carwile, director of ODS, said the check was presented recently by Dan Ladyman, Office Depot’s regional manager. ODS staff members Chrisa Potthast and Brean Rhoades had contacted Office Depot about funding the project, prompting Ladyman to visit ODS to learn more about the office and the Academic Study Organizers. As a result, his corporation decided to help fund the project.

Carwile said the tool was first used by ODS during the fall 2002 semester. “At that time, it appeared to have advantages for students with disabilities, particularly learning disabilities.  After tracking student use and progress for an entire academic year, the drop-out rate of students with learning disabilities declined for those who used the tool,” she said.

The money will be used to purchase more Academic Study Organizers, specifically binders, paper products, and other materials necessary to complete the organizers.  Once the kits are complete, they will be available free of charge to students with disabilities.

For more information, contact Carwile at 206-6666.
