UIS to host 3rd annual Technology Day

April 16, 2004

SPRINGFIELD - The University of Illinois at Springfield will host its third annual Technology Day from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Friday, April 23, in conference rooms and the concourse area located on the lower level of the Public Affairs Center on the UIS campus. Designed to showcase teaching and learning technologies that have already been implemented at UIS as well as others that are anticipated in the near future, Technology Day also serves as an aid for those who would like to increase their technological understanding. The event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Lanny Arvan, assistant CIO for educational technologies and associate professor of economics at the U of I at Urbana-Champaign, will deliver the keynote address from noon to 1 p.m. in PAC conference room C. His topic will be “Dialogic Learning Objects and Beyond.”

Arvan’s view is that instructors typically use course management systems as little more than “publicly accessible file drawers” where they post lecture notes and the syllabus. Instead, he feels they should be encouraged to get beyond the “lecture note phase” and produce interactive sites where the online part of the course complements the face-to-face part, and vice versa.

In addition to the keynote speech, the event will feature demonstrations and presentations on topics such as dealing with spam, viruses, and other security issues; webcasting; adaptive hardware and software; digital cameras and camcorders; advanced PowerPoint; and more. Participants will also be able to sign up for door prizes including mousepads, t-shirts, and memory keys.

For more information about Arvan’s presentation, go to www.syllabus.com/news_article.asp?id=8949&typeid=155. For more information about Technology Day, contact Albert Whittenberg or Gary Bach in UIS’ Office of Educational Technology at 206-6550.
