UIS music groups to present Spring Showcase Concert

April 15, 2004

SPRINGFIELD -  Music groups at the University of Illinois at Springfield will present their annual Spring Showcase Concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 30, in the Studio Theater, located on the lower level of the Public Affairs Center on the UIS campus. The program will feature the UIS Band, Chamber Ensemble, World Percussion Ensemble, and Chorus performing a wide range of music including jazz, classical, and folk.

Highlights will include the combined chorus and chamber ensemble’s performance of J.S. Bach’s Schafe Koennen Sicher Weiden (Sheep May Safely Graze), the percussion ensemble’s African and Middle Eastern hand-drumming demonstration, and a jazz selection combining the talents of the band and the chorus.

Under the direction of Sharon Graf, assistant professor of ethnomusicology, since its beginning in 2001, UIS Music has developed and grown, and opportunities for campus musicians to demonstrate their skills continue to expand.  The Pep Band plays at select Prairie Stars basketball games.  The Chamber Ensemble performed last semester at the UIS Alumni Recognition Dinner; and the Chorus performed at the UIS Talent Expo in February.

Notes Graf, “The Spring Showcase gives all our groups an opportunity to perform the music they have been working on throughout the spring semester.”

Admission is $5 and tickets are available at the Sangamon Auditorium Ticket Office, PAC level two, phone 206-6160.  All proceeds from ticket sales will go toward the UIS Music Scholarship fund to assist outstanding student musicians with their college expenses.
