UIS sponsors events in observance of Earth Week

April 7, 2004

SPRINGFIELD - The Department of Environmental Studies at the University of Illinois at Springfield will host two events in observance of Earth Week, which this year focuses on the theme “The Greening of Public Institutions.” All events are free and open to the public and will be held in Brookens Auditorium, located on the lower level of Brookens Library on the UIS campus, or in the surrounding concourse area.

At 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, Kevin Greene, program manager of the Office of Pollution Prevention, Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, will be the keynote speaker. Green’s topic will be “Greening Public Facilities.”

At 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, Jack Barnette, environmental scientist/indoor air specialist with the U.S. EPA Region 5, will deliver the keynote presentation on “Indoor Air Quality in Green and Sustainable Buildings: What You Need to Know to Get Started.”

A panel discussion will immediately follow Barnette’s presentation. An exhibit area highlighting local resources and environmental groups will be available for both events.

Earth Week is held in conjunction with Earth Day, April 22, which has been an annual event since it was founded by Gaylord Nelson and organized by Dennis Hayes in 1970 as a chance for people around the world to celebrate the planet and our responsibility toward it. Currently more than 5,000 groups in 184 countries participate in the Earthday Network, actively promoting environmental causes at the community, regional, and global levels.

For more information about the activities at UIS, contact Darlene Powell, Environmental Studies graduate assistant, at 206-7874. For more information about Earth Day, go to www.earthday.org/about/about-faq.stm .
