SPRINGFIELD – “Celebrate Engagement,” a reception acknowledging students’ contributions to local community-based organizations during the past year, will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 1, in the Public Affairs Center restaurant at the University of Illinois at Springfield. The event is sponsored by UIS’ Office of Student Volunteers and Service-Learning.
The event is open to any UIS student who has volunteered with or served with a community organization during the 2002-2003 academic year. Various students and student clubs will also receive special recognition for their time and effort.
Karin Cotterman, program coordinator for student volunteers and service-learning, noted, “This is an opportunity to celebrate all the ways our students are engaged with the local community. During the past year UIS students have taken part in a number of civic engagement and service activities that ranged from politics, the environment, education, and social work, to working with groups such as the Animal Protective League, The Springfield Project, and others.”
The reception is part of activities marking National Volunteer Week, April 27 through May 3. Students are asked to RSVP in order to receive a certificate at the event.
