UIS to host Mayday Film/Video Festival

SPRINGFIELD – The University of Illinois at Springfield class Organizing for Peace and Justice, in conjunction with the Peace Action Coalition, will sponsor a Mayday Film/Video Festival from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Thursday, May 2, in Brookens Auditorium, located on the lower level of Brookens Library on the UIS campus. The program is free and open to the public.

Three films will be presented.

“Rebel Radio” is a documentary about the Free Radio Movement and features Richard Edmondson of San Francisco Liberation Radio, Stephen Dunifer of Free Radio Berkeley, and Mbanna Kantako of Springfield’s Human Rights Radio. (City TV, Toronto; 2002; 12 minutes)

“Praha 2000” was shot in the streets of Prague during the September 2000 anti-corporate globalization protests against the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. The video is a compilation of footage supplied by video activists who attended the event. (Independent Media Center; 2002; 55 minutes)

“Pickaxe” traces the development of the blockade and tree-sit staged in defense of the old growth forest at Warner Creek, Oregon. Tim Ream, who produced and directed this video, was one of the main participants in the event. (Pickaxe Productions; 2001; 94 minutes)
