Juan De Marcos’ Afro-Cuban All Stars to jam at Sangamon Auditorium

SPRINGFIELD – The Afro-Cuban All Stars will perform a mixture of Cuban jazz, brassy big band, and African rhythms at the University of Illinois at Springfield’s Sangamon Auditorium at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 20, sponsored by Illinois Times.

Juan de Marcos Gonzalez formed the Afro-Cuban All Stars as a multi-generational big band with a mission to explore Cuba’s rich musical heritage and to show the world the diversity, continuity, and vitality of the island’s music. The band’s Grammy-nominated debut, A Toda Cuba Le Gusta, was essentially homage to the heroes of Gonzalez’ youth: the great singers of the golden age of the fifties. Distinto, Diferente, the band’s newest release, has a broader scope, ambitiously paying tribute to the diversity of Cuban music, marrying the past and present.

The creative explosion of the best musicians Cuba has turned out in the last half century produces a variety of contrasting styles including classic son montuno, contemporary timba, swinging big band guajira, Afro-Cuban jazz, the pure tribal rhythms of abakua, bolero, and more.  It is music to dance to – and the orchestra pit will be open for dancing!

A Pre-show Discussion & Questions session (PDQ), sponsored by Barnes & Noble, will be held at 7:15 p.m. in the Studio Theatre, PAC level 1.

Tickets are $26, 23, 21, and 13. Tickets can be ordered by calling the Sangamon Auditorium Ticket Office, (217) 206-6160 or (800) 207-6960, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The auditorium administrative offices can be reached at (217) 206-6150 or by e-mail at info@SangamonAuditorium.org.
