UIS Facility Services is currently promoting numerous recycling activities to preserve natural resources, save energy, and reduce the amount of solid waste generated on campus and sent to our local landfill. UIS has extended its recycling services to include all types of paper, plastics, aluminum, and special items including batteries, fluorescent bulbs, and ink cartridges.

In 1990, the Illinois General Assembly enacted the College Recycling Law, requiring each Illinois public university and community college to develop a solid waste reduction plan that will guide them to reduce the amount of waste generated on campuses by 40 percent by January 1, 2000. UIS was the first regulated Illinois school to develop their plan and submit it to the state in 1994. At that time, UIS received a grant from the state for $32,000 to purchase recycling containers and a cardboard baler to improve our program and add more items accepted for recycling. Currently, UIS is recycling more than 40 percent of the solid waste generated on campus.

This web serves as a recycling guide for the UIS community to better understand the program and its guidelines. For more info contact Bob Raebig
