Using iTunes 7 to Subscribe and Listen to a Podcast, Enhanced Podcast, and Vodcast

The following sections will help you to better understand the software needed, and the process necessary to subscribe and experience podcasts and vodcasts. While there is a variety for podcasts, the software of choice for UIS is iTunes.

 

Software Requirements

To subscribe and listen to a podcast, enhanced podcast, or vodcast on your computer [Windows or Mac], you will need the following cross-platform software program, which is available as a free download:

iTunes 7 or above

Once you have iTunes 7 on your computer or if you already have the program on your computer, please follow the steps below to subscribe and listen to a podcast.

 


Subscribe and Listen to a Podcast or Enhanced Podcast

1. Launch iTunes.

2. Choose the Advanced menu, and select Subscribe to Podcast.

3. In the dialog box that appears type in the URL for the podcast and click on OK.

4. The podcast will begin to download.

5. Once the podcast is downloaded, click the small triangle to the left of the podcast title to display the podcast(s).

6. Double-click on a podcast episode or select an episode and click on the play button to listen to the podcast.

7. If there is more than one podcast, click on Get button to download and listen to the additional podcasts.

8. If you are listening to an enhanced podcast, be sure to open the artwork display area to view the images and clickable links. To do this -

  • On the bottom-left of iTunes, click on the Show or hide song artwork button [first button from the right].

9. The artwork display area will now be visible.

10. The enhanced podcast will appear in the artwork display area as you listen to the podcast.

11. An enhanced podcast can include chapter marks that allow you to access specific chapters. Choose the Chapters menu, to view the chapters in the podcast.

12. When you choose the Chapters menu, a list will display the chapters.

Subscribe and View a Vodcast

1. Launch iTunes.

2. Choose the Advanced menu, and select Subscribe to Podcast.

3. In the dialog box that appears type in the URL for the vodcast and click on OK.

4. The vodcast will begin to download.

5. Once the vodcast is downloaded, click the small triangle to the left of the vodcast title to display the vodcast.

6. On the bottom-left of the iTunes, click on the Show or hide song artwork button [first button from the right].

7. The artwork display area will now be visible.

8. Double-click on the vodcast title or click on the play button to view the vodcast.

9. The vodcast will appear in the artwork display area.

Update a Podcast, Enhanced Podscast, or Vodcast

1. Right-click [Windows] or control+click [Macintosh] on the podcast/vodcast title, which will display a contextual menu.

2. From the menu list that appears, select Update Podcast.

  • If the podcast/vodcast still does not update, use the following instructions to delete the podcast and resubscribe.

 


Delete a Podcast, Enhanced Podcast, or Vodcast

1. Click on the podcast/vodcast title you wish to delete and press the Delete key on your keyboard.

2. A dialog box appears requesting you to confirm the action. Choose Remove.

3. Another dialog box appears that provides you with three options:

  • Cancel – Cancels the delete process
  • Move to Recycle Bin – Removes the audio file to the Recycle Bin
  • Keep Files – Deletes the podcast but retains the audio file

Troubleshooting

  • If the podcast/vodcast downloads and does not play after a download, click on the exclamation mark that appears to the left of the title of the podcast/vodcast. Report the error message to the contact mentioned below for support.
  • If the download process is interrupted, follow the steps in the “Updating a Podcast or Vodcast” section.
  • If the vodcast does not play after download, uninstall QuickTime 7 and reinstall QuickTime 7. Should you need assistance with the process, please contact Munindra Khaund for support.
  • Due to heavy Internet traffic, the download may time out or there will be a “network operation timed out” error. To resume the process, follow the steps in the “Updating a Podcast or Vodcast” section.
