The courses offered in the department also stress active discussion and interaction between students and faculty. Philosophy is not solely a lecture-oriented field of study. Instructors are very involved in weekly online course discussions, and students who participate are more likely to get the most out of each class.
Since online classes do not possess the same face-to-face quality as their traditional classroom counterparts, students are also encouraged to get to know their fellow classmates in “coffeehouses”: course chatrooms that allow for friendly banter off-topic from formal course discussion.
This has become an excellent way for students to begin friendships with like interests and has made it easier to get to know other students in the program.
