AMTRAK ARRIVALS - When purchasing your train tickets, please make sure your final destination is the Springfield, IL Amtrak Station.  Please check the online Orientation session schedule before selecting your departure time. The New Student schedule is timed so students will accomplish the tasks that are required before starting classes.  If you leave before the end of the Orientation program you may miss out on important activities like advising and registering for classes. Make sure you give yourself at least an hour between the end of the program and your departure time to get to the train station.

To get from the train station to campus you may want to use one of the taxi companies serving Springfield.

PARKING – If you are driving to campus parking for New Student Orientation will be in Parking Lot D with overflow in Parking Lot C. Please reference the “Visitors and Residential Student Parking map” link for further details.  Look for the Orientation Staff in their blue orientation polos near Parking Lot D for assistance.


FIRST YEAR NEW STUDENT CHECK IN.  (Campus Map) – Students in the two-day program should check-in to their overnight accommodations in Lincoln Residence Hall at least 30 minutes before their first placement exam.  If you are taking three placement exams it is recommended you check in by 7:30 a.m.  If you are taking two exams, check in by 8:30 a.m. and if you only have one placement exam, check-in by 9 a.m.  You will be asked to check out from 7:00-7:45 a.m. the following day. A secure storage area for your luggage is provided.

If you are unsure if you will need to take a math placement exam, please contact Undergraduate Advising at (217) 206.7471. If you are unsure if you will be taking a language placement exam please contact Modern Language at (217) 206.6779.

Check-in for the one-day program first year orientation program will take place in the University Hall Building (UHB).

TRANSFER AND GRADUATE ORIENTATION CHECK-IN. Check-in for the Transfer and Graduate Student Orientations will be in the Public Affairs Center (PAC), Horseshoe Driveway Entrance on the first floor. The July 23 Transfer session check-in is from 11:30 A.M.-12:15 p.m.  The August 22 Transfer and Graduate Student Orientation check-in will be from 4-5:30 p.m.


What to Bring


  • Government Issued ID: Passport, Driver’s License, State ID (if you do not have a driver’s license)
  • Proof of immunization if not already provided to the university
  • Net ID and Net Password for class registration
  • Spending money (for vending machines or the UIS Bookstore – which has great UIS gear!)
  • Rain wear (just in case!)
  • Sweater or jacket (some meeting rooms can be a little chilly)

For Overnight sessions: 

  • Casual clothes
  • Gym wear (outside activities)
  • Running shoe (You’ll be taking part in interactive activities)
  • Toiletries (such as shampoo, soap, toothbrush & toothpaste, (etc.)
  • Bath Towel (optional, one is provided)
  • Pillow, Blanket or sleeping bag
  • Alarm clock


  • Casual clothes
  • Comfortable gym wear (You’ll be taking part in group activities)
  • Comfortable running shoe
  • Sweater or jacket (some meeting rooms can be a little chilly)
  • Rain wear (just in case)
  • A good book ( you will have some time to relax)
