Focus On: Therkildsen Field Station at Emiquon
Near the towns of Lewiston and Havana, IL, about 45 miles northwest from Springfield on the Illinois River.

Land that was under cultivation for most of the 20th century is now being returned to its original state as a floodplain on the Illinois River. Spring rains filled in the ancient Thompson Lake, which is now home to a large variety of wildlife. This photo of the Thompson Lake pelican colony was taken on May 29 from a (rocking!) canoe by Deborah Berman. The late afternoon sun shows off these handsome fellows terrifically.
