SPRINGFIELD – "Hecho en Cuba," a group of works inspired by artist Philip Hartigan's month-long stay in Cuba, will be on display at the Visual Arts Gallery at the University of Illinois at Springfield from Tuesday, November 6, through Thursday, November 29.  The gallery will host an artist's talk beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 8, followed by an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. The artist's talk, reception, and exhibit are free and open to the public.

Hartigan, an English-born artist, lived in Dusseldorf, London, Paris, Barcelona, and Madrid before coming to Chicago in 2002.  This exhibit comprises a series of prints on cigar boxes and other materials that convey his impressions of Cuba.  The works explore themes of displacement, rootlessness, and cultural disorientation as they affect an observer in a foreign culture.  Hartigan's work has previously been exhibited in 25 group and solo shows in Spain, the United Kingdom, and across the U.S.

The Visual Arts Gallery is located in room 201 of the Health and Sciences Building on the UIS campus. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday. For further information, go to www.uis.edu/visualarts/ or contact the gallery by phone at 217/206-6506 or by e-mail at visarts-ga@uis.edu.
