SPRINGFIELD – In celebration of Illinois Arts Week, Class Acts, the K-12 educational program of Sangamon Auditorium, UIS, will sponsor two performances of the Cashore Marionettes at Springfield public schools on Thursday, October 11 – at Feitshans Academy at 10 a.m. and Lindsay Elementary at 1:30 p.m.

Illinois Arts Week was established to focus attention on our state’s vast cultural resources and to increase public awareness of the arts. This year's campaign slogan, "Connect with the Arts," invites all Illinoisans to establish, deepen, or expand their relationship with the arts and to join together in making the arts a visible and vital part of everyone's everyday life in Illinois.  This year's Illinois Arts Week will take place October 7-13.

By providing students with the experience of a live performance, Sangamon Auditorium hopes to assist the youth of Springfield and the surrounding communities with developing an understanding of the nature of the performing arts. "We hope that this performance will help to inspire students to create and perform," says Carly Shank, director of audience development.  "As students begin to create and perform their own works of art and are able to observe those of others, they will strengthen their imaginations and problem-solving skills and learn to respond to the creativity of others."  Occasionally, Sangamon Auditorium is able to bring in a performance that is portable enough to be taken to other areas in the community, allowing the Auditorium to reach beyond its building.  Taking these performances to the schools themselves eliminates transportation costs for the schools.

Cashore Marionettes-Simple Gifts, features original vignettes and is a series of touching portrayals and poignant scenes from everyday life, set to music by such composers as Vivaldi, Strauss, Beethoven, and Copland.  Two additional performances of the Cashore Marionettes will take place at the University of Illinois at Springfield on October 12 in the Studio Theatre.  The first performance will start at 10 a.m. and is part of the Class Acts program.  The second showing, part of the Family Series at UIS, will begin later that evening, at 7 p.m. The sponsor of the Family Series at UIS is the Kids' Closet.  Media Sponsors of the Family Series at UIS include ABC News Channel 20, WFMB, and KISS FM.

Tickets for the Family Series event at Sangamon Auditorium are still on sale.  To order tickets, visit www.SangamonAuditorium.org or order tickets by calling the Sangamon Auditorium Ticket Office at (217) 206-6160 or toll free at 800-207-6960.

Sangamon Auditorium is located at the University of Illinois at Springfield and hosts more than 120 performances annually.  Also home to the Illinois Symphony Orchestra and Springfield Ballet Company, it is the only auditorium of its kind and size in the Springfield area, with a seating capacity of 2,018.  Sangamon Auditorium continues to fulfill its mission of presenting and supporting varied cultural and educational professional arts activities to audiences in Springfield, Sangamon County, and the surrounding areas.  The auditorium administrative offices can be reached at (217) 206-6150 or by e-mail at onstage@uis.edu.
