SPRINGFIELD -- A team of students from the University of Illinois at Springfield's Clinical Laboratory Science program took first place honors in the Student Bowl competition held during the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science - Illinois annual conference, held April 18 to 20 in Morton.

UIS fielded two teams in the competition, which included students from clinical laboratory science programs around the state. In the final round, UIS Team 2 defeated the team from Evanston Hospital to win the title. A UIS team also won the competition in 2005.
Team 2 members were seniors Melissa Morris (captain), Mohamed Osman, Niki Patel, Ayo Fajembola, and Mike Pyle (alternate).
Team 1 members were seniors Mindy Bassett (captain), Jenna Young, Jessica Ambrose, Julie Fang, and Mendy Hannah (alternate).
In addition, two UIS students were elected to spots on the ASCLS-IL Student Forum during the conference. Lindsey Rolando was chosen secretary-elect and next year will replace UIS student Jessica Ambrose as forum secretary; Bridget Cartwright was chosen treasurer-elect.
Students attending the ASCLS annual conference are able to take part in professional seminars, elect officials for the Student Forum, compete in the student bowl, and network with students in other laboratory science programs across the state. Faculty members in UIS' CLS program are also active participants in the conference.
The American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science is the preeminent organization for clinical laboratory science practitioners in this country and vigorously promotes all aspects of practice, education, and management to ensure excellent, accessible, cost-effective laboratory services for consumers of health care.
The Clinical Laboratory Science program at UIS awards the bachelor of science degree. The curriculum features both broad-based and selective learning experiences encompassing theory and practice in all areas of clinical laboratory science. Students who complete the program are eligible for certification by the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathology and the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel. The program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences.
