SPRINGFIELD -- The 10th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry Regiment Band -- a recreation of the original brass band that accompanied the regiment during the Civil War -- will give its inaugural concert at 4 p.m., Sunday, May 6, in the Studio Theater at the University of Illinois at Springfield.
The 10th Cavalry was from the Sangamon, Logan, and Christian county areas and was mustered into service in 1861 at Camp Butler. Today's band members are from the same counties and play period music on original and reproduction instruments. Regimental commander and band manager (Colonel) Ted Henry noted, "Our regiment was informally known as 'Lincoln's Own,' being from Sangamon County and the Springfield area, and we are proud to represent Central Illinois.
"The band has been in the planning and development stage for 10 years, and this event will be our initiation," Henry said.
The 10th Cavalry Band is under the direction of (Captain) Todd Cranson, band and chamber orchestra director at UIS, and is an affiliated musical ensemble with UIS Music. Band members include music instructors at several area high schools, a number of Springfield Municipal Band members, and other local musicians.
