SPRINGFIELD -- Keith Miller, professor of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Springfield, has been named editor of IEEE Technology and Society, the official publication of the Society on Social Implications of Technology.
The society addresses such issues as environmental, health, and safety implications of technology; engineering ethics and professional responsibility; and social issues related to energy, information technology, and telecommunications. SSIT is part of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and has approximately 2,000 members worldwide.
Miller will serve as associate editor for the magazine until December 2007, when he will become editor-in-chief.
Miller has been a member of UIS' Computer Science faculty since 1993. At UIS, much of his teaching focuses on software testing and on ethics for computing professionals. He has also been an early adopter of online teaching. In addition, he serves as associate director of the UIS Emiquon Field Station, part of a wetlands restoration project undertaken by the Nature Conservancy. In 2000 the U of I selected him as a University Scholar, the highest academic honor that the university can bestow.
Miller received the Outstanding Service Award from the Association for Computing Machinery and its Special Interest Group on Computers and Society in 2006. He also was part of an executive committee that developed a code of ethics for software engineers that was subsequently adopted by both the IEEE and ACM.
Miller taught at The College of William and Mary and at Virginia Commonwealth University, has been a software engineering consultant, and has served as an expert witness at trials involving intellectual property and software quality.
