January 8, 2007

Contact: Mary Ellen McElligott, 206-6073, mmcel1@uis.edu

The University of Illinois at Springfield will offer ASP 101 A Survey of the Universe, taught by Assistant Professor of Astronomy/Physics John Martin, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on Thursdays from January 18 to May 3 in room 2034 of University Hall on the UIS campus.

Designed for non-science majors, the course is offered for credit to UIS students and also as a non-credit weekly program to others who are curious about astronomy. The course has been approved by the Illinois State Board of Education as a provider of CPDUs (credit for professional development units) for teachers. Families and groups are encouraged to attend.

Survey of the Universe will help participants understand the ever-changing sky as well as how recent advances in the field of astronomy might affect our world.  The UIS Observatory will be used as weather and time permit.

Martin is co-host of UIS' popular star parties. He is also the lead author of an article on the Hubble Space Telescope published in the December issue of the Astronomical Journal ("The Chrysalis Opens: Photometry from the Eta Carinae Hubble Space Telescope Treasury Project, 2002-2006").

To register as a non-credit participant, call (217) 206-6073 during regular business hours. Cost is $80; $40 for those under 18; and $90 for teachers seeking CPDUs. Ongoing UIS students must register for this course through the regular online process.
