The Visual Arts Gallery at the University of Illinois at Springfield will open its 2007 spring season with “Skin: New Work by Michelle Coakes,” which will be on display January 16 through February 8. The gallery will host an evening with the artist from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 18. Both the reception and exhibit are free and open to the public.
Coakes is a professor of art at Lincoln Land Community College and author of Creative Pottery. Her work includes sculptural ceramic objects – some exploring pure form and others referencing vessels. An interest in skin, both literal and symbolic, inspires many of the pieces.
The Visual Arts Gallery is located in room 201 of the Health and Sciences Building on the UIS campus. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday. For further information, contact Lara Stremsterfer by phone at 206-6506 or by e-mail at visarts-ga@uis.edu.
