Using mostly their own words, "The Exonerated" tells the story of six people – including Gary Gauger of McHenry County, Illinois – who were wrongfully convicted and sentenced to death. The play was originally produced in 2002 in Los Angeles and off-Broadway in New York, and was adapted for film by Court-TV in 2005.

The production is directed by Dennis Rendleman, director of the Pre-Law Center, with assistance from graduate student Natalia Vera. The cast of UIS students, faculty, staff, and alumni and community members includes Demetrius Delancy, Myaa Fallon, Patrick Foster, Grant Johnson, Kamau Kemayo, Cari Keysear, Dennis Rendleman, Carly Shank, Nick Teeter, and Michael Wallace.

Hunger Banquet Raises Awareness

In observance of National Hunger and Homelessness Week, the University of Illinois at Springfield is hosting its annual Oxfam Hunger Banquet from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, November 14, in the Great Room in Lincoln Residence Hall.

The program will also include a video, artwork, and displays, as well as a presentation by UIS Capital Scholars student Shana Stine. The theme of this year's event is "Poverty Has a Woman's Face."

In a Hunger Banquet, guests are randomly assigned high-, middle-, or low- income rankings and are served food that range from gourmet meals to small portions of rice and water. The intent is to heighten participants' awareness of hunger in the U.S. and abroad.

"Oxfam" was the original postal abbreviation for the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief, which was started in England during World War II to provide relief to war victims in Europe. Oxfam America, an affiliate of Oxfam International, is a relief and development organization that works to create lasting solutions to poverty, hunger, and injustice.

The dinner is free and open to the public, however reservations are required; donations of non-perishable food and canned goods will be accepted. To make a reservation for the UIS Hunger Banquet or for more information, contact the UIS Office of Student Volunteers and Civic Engagement at 206-7716. Additional information about hunger banquets is available at www.hungerbanquet.org/.

Silent Auction for Mexican Diez

Today, Thursday, November 8, is the final day for the silent auction benefiting The Mexican Diez, a group of ten students from UIS who will be traveling to Mexico this spring to study the effects of globalization.

The group will spend ten days in poverty-stricken areas of Mexico City and rural communities such as Chiapas. As delegates of Witness for Peace they will interview families, grassroots activists, scholars, labor organizers, and other experts in everyday life. The students will return home after their research to present their work to the UIS campus and Springfield community.

Currently the students are working to raise the funds necessary to make the trip a reality, with costs including transportation, translators, and access to non-governmental organizations to be interviewed. Approximately $20,000 needs to be raised through personal donations from the group, fundraising events, and contributions from generous individuals.

The silent auction is part of this fundraising effort. All community members are encouraged to stop by and bid on items generously donated by local businesses and community members. The auction runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the lower level of the PAC.

GLBT Forums To Be Held in PAC

Dr. Roni Sanlo, director of the UCLA Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Center, will be on campus Thursday and Friday. She will be here to work with the UIS community and give advice on issues of campus climate, particularly related to sexual orientation, and will be visiting with various groups.

Thursday, November 8, from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m., there will be an open forum for faculty and staff members to meet with Dr. Sanlo. Directly following, from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m., an open forum for students will be held.

Both of these forums will take place in the Public Affairs Center Conference Room C.

Former NY Times Reporter on Campus

Pulitzer-Prize winner Judith Miller, former investigative reporter for The New York Times, will be on campus on Wednesday, November 7, as part of the first two programs in the Government Accountability and a Free Press Project.

The project is a series of events designed to explore legal, ethical, and practical political and policy issues that may arise as members of the press engage in investigative reporting that is intended to uncover less-than-transparent government conduct. The event will start with a luncheon featuring Charles Lewis, president of The Fund for Independence in Journalism, and other panel members.

A panel discussion featuring Miller will be held in the Studio Theatre of the PAC at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free, but tickets are required.

In July 2005, Miller was jailed for contempt of court for refusing to testify before a federal grand jury investigating the source of a leak outing Valerie Plame as a covert CIA agent. Because of this, she spent 85 days in jail, twice as long as any American reporter has ever been confined for protecting a confidential source.

Bill Wheelhouse, general manager of WUIS, will be moderating the event. To obtain tickets for the evening program, call the Sangamon Auditorium Ticket Office at 206-6160. If you can't attend the program, you can watch a live webcast by going to www.uis.edu/technology/uislive.html at the time of the event.
