Silent Auction for Mexican Diez

Today, Thursday, November 8, is the final day for the silent auction benefiting The Mexican Diez, a group of ten students from UIS who will be traveling to Mexico this spring to study the effects of globalization.

The group will spend ten days in poverty-stricken areas of Mexico City and rural communities such as Chiapas. As delegates of Witness for Peace they will interview families, grassroots activists, scholars, labor organizers, and other experts in everyday life. The students will return home after their research to present their work to the UIS campus and Springfield community.

Currently the students are working to raise the funds necessary to make the trip a reality, with costs including transportation, translators, and access to non-governmental organizations to be interviewed. Approximately $20,000 needs to be raised through personal donations from the group, fundraising events, and contributions from generous individuals.

The silent auction is part of this fundraising effort. All community members are encouraged to stop by and bid on items generously donated by local businesses and community members. The auction runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the lower level of the PAC.
