Michael Cheney named founding editor of the Journal of Media Sociology

Michael Cheney, professor of communication, has been named founding editor of the Journal of Media Sociology by David Demers, publisher of Marquette Books.

Cheney is also a senior fellow in the Institute of Government and Public Affairs. He previously served as UIS provost and dean of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and associate provost at Drake University.

His research interests focus on new media, politics and the media, and social power in the work of Harold Innis.

Works by Jim Ottery appear in new anthology

Jim Ottery, assistant professor of English, wrote the foreword to Wisconsin Indian Literature: Anthology of Native Voices, published by the University of Wisconsin Press and edited by Kathleen Tigerman. The book also features an excerpt from the essay "Rhetorical Sovereignty" as well as the poem "Samson Occom's Diary," both written by Ottery, who is a registered member of the Brotherown Indians of Wisconsing Tribe. The poem previously appeared in The Bedfore Anthology of American Literature.

Herring participates in Oxford Roundtable

Jennifer Herring, assistant professor of Teacher Education, was invited to present a paper and lead a discussion at the Oxford Roundtable, held in March at the University of Oxford, Oxford, England.

Herring's paper, "The power of economics and parental school choice for poor students in grades K-12," was presented in discussions with 35 other educators from around the world in a forum at Oxford's Pembroke College. The forum focused on Education for the Future: Public vs Religious Schooling. Herring also will have an opportunity to publish the paper in the Oxford journal Forum on Public Policy.

The Oxford Roundtable, established in 1989, provides a venue for educators from the United Kingdom, United States, and other countries to meet and discuss issues related to educational policy at both the national and international levels. Invitation criteria include nominations from previous Roundtable participants.

Flammini to address ADHD support group

Vince Flammini, visiting clinical counselor in UIS' Counseling Center and an academic adviser with the Social Work program, will speak at the ADHD Support Group meeting to be held at the Springfield Center for Independent Living on April 16. Flammini is also a licensed clinical social worker in private practice. His presentation will provide information about ADHD and ways to support individuals affected by it.
