"On Beauty, the Limit, and Failure"

A presentation by Chancellor's Distinguished Guest Michael Jones McKean

6 p.m. Thursday, March 27, in Brookens Auditorium

McKean's lecture will focus on his own research and work as they relate to specific individuals throughout history who have been intensely driven by quests that ultimately ended in failure.

His installation project "The sunshine of our last day," built specially for this exhibit, is on display in the Visual Arts Gallery through March 27.

3rd Annual Springfield Area Colleges Relay for Life

an overnight team event to raise funds and awareness for cancer research, education, advocacy, and service

Saturday, April 26, at Kiwanis Stadium

UIS will field a team in memory of Terri Jackson.

The event begins at 6 p.m. with a Survivor Victory Lap, followed by a second lap for survivors and caregivers. After both laps are completed, survivors and caregivers are invited to attend a reception.

Chancellor's Awards on Diversity

These awards honor individuals and units at UIS for extraordinary accomplishments in achieving the university's goal of excellence in a learning environment enriched by diverse experiences, culture, and perspectives.

Nominations should be submitted to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Access and Equal Opportunity by April 15.

UIS students are invited to become volunteer docents for the Illinois State Museum natural history exhibit “Changes: Dynamic Illinois Environments.”

4th Annual Women's Issues Caucus Student Award
in Recognition for Positive Contributions in Gendered Issues to the UIS
Campus Community through Activism

Presented by the Council of the Women's Center & the Women's Issues Caucus student organization

Nominations for both awards are due in the Women's Center, SAB 35, by 5 p.m. on Friday, April 18.

• Students may be nominated for both awards, but only students may be nominated for the student award.
• Women and men may be nominated for both awards.
• Community members who have contributed to the environment for women at UIS are also eligible to be nominated.

The Annual Garden Party and Awards Ceremony will be Thursday, May 1, beginning at 5 p.m. in the Women's Peace and Friendship Garden, near the campus pond (rain location -- PAC restaurant).

If you receive a Statement of Economic Interests form...

Some University employees are required to file a Statement of Economic Interests form under the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act. The Office of the Secretary of State will send out the forms on or around March 17.

If you receive one of these forms in the mail:

Submit the completed form to the University of Illinois Ethics Office by April 24. The University Ethics Officer will review and forward all completed statements to the Secretary of State by the May 1 deadline.

Student to deliver opening invocation

UIS doctoral student Driss El Akrich will deliver the opening invocation of the Illinois State Senate on Thursday, March 13.

To watch a live webcast, go to www.ilga.gov/senate/audvid.asp between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. (The time that a session begins is established by the Senate and varies from day to day.)

This is the second time that Driss, a Fulbright Scholar from Morocco, has been chosen to deliver the invocation. He noted that he was selected to represent "all the Muslim community, not only in Springfield but all of Illinois, as part of the Senate's outreach to all faiths in the state."

Innocence Project reception postponed

Due to the prediction of severe weather, the Defenders of the Innocent Awards reception, originally scheduled for 5-7 p.m. tonight (Tuesday, March 4) at the Pasfield House in Springfield, has been postponed.

The Downstate Illinois Innocence Project plans to reschedule the reception for a later date when Chicago attorneys Richard Kling and Susana Ortiz can be present along with their client, Herbert Whitlock.
