U of I Office of Planning and Administration receives grant and award

Three members of the U of I system's Office of Planning and Administration traveled to Washington, D.C., on Dec. 10 to receive a $50,000 grant and a 2007 Mellon Award for Technology Collaboration for innovative open-source software development. Presenting the award at the Fall Task Force meeting of the Coalition for Networked Information was Sir Timothy Berners-Lee, director of the World Wide Web Consortium and one of the inventors of the World Wide Web. Nominations open for Student Leadership Award

The U of I Alumni Association is accepting nominations for the annual Student Leadership Award, which honors exceptional graduating students for their volunteer contributions as leaders of student societies, groups, and organizations at UIS.

Undergraduate, graduate, or professional students who received their degrees in summer or fall 2007, or who will graduate in May 2008 are eligible for the award.

Nominees should have demonstrated exceptional leadership through involvement in campus and/or student organizations. "Leadership" may have been demonstrated through service as an officer or chair, or through loyalty and commitment by someone whose actions inspired others. It could have spanned an entire academic career or it could be more limited in scope.

The deadline to submit nominations is Wednesday, January 16.

The program is sponsored by the UIS Campus Alumni Advisory Board. Awards will be presented at a ceremony late in the spring semester.

Dr. John Corvino to speak

Philosopher, moralist, and gay rights advocate Dr. John Corvino will speak at 4 p.m. Wednesday, December 5, in Brookens Auditorium. His presentation is titled "What's Morally Wrong with Homosexuality?" and is free and open to the public.

Corvino has traveled the country for more than 15 years, speaking on gay rights. His programs combine philosophy with sensitivity and humor to challenge people of all viewpoints to rethink easy assumptions about homosexuality and morality.

Currently an associate professor of philosophy at Wayne State University in Detroit, Corvino is an award-winning teacher and the recipient of a 2004 Spirit of Detroit Award from the Detroit City Council for his work on behalf of GLBT rights. He is the editor of Same Sex: Debating the Ethics, Science, and Culture of Homosexuality (Rowman and Littlefield, 1997) and his numerous articles and opinion pieces have appeared in regional and national media, online in the Independent Gay Forum, and in academic journals and anthologies. Corvino holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Texas at Austin.

His appearance at UIS is sponsored by the Office of Student Affairs, the Speakers' Bureau, and the Diversity Task Force.

Freedom from Smoking

A free informational session presented by the Office of Human Resources

Freedom from Smoking is the American Lung Association's most popular smoking cessation program; it is expected to start in early to mid-January.

No commitment is necessary to attend the informational meeting.
