UIS to host Central Illinois High School Newspaper Conference

Some 135 student staff members of area high school newspapers and their advisers will gather at UIS on Friday, February 2, for the Ninth Annual Central Illinois High School Newspaper Conference. The half-day event will be hosted by conference organizers Debbie Landis, adviser to UIS’ student newspaper The Journal, and Mary Bohlen, associate professor of Communication.

Bohlen noted that this year’s conference is expected to have a record attendance, with participants from Springfield, Southeast, Lanphier, Sacred Heart-Griffin, Rochester, and Pleasant Plains high schools. "High school newspaper advisers routinely praise this opportunity for their students to hear excellent speakers on a variety of topics," she added.

Students will attend presentations on layout and design, interviewing and broadcast writing, photography, covering the arts, online publishing and ad sales, and sports reporting. State Journal-Register Publisher Sue Schmitt will be the luncheon speaker.

Other speakers include:
(from the State Journal-Register) Robert Burns, sportswriter; Kelsea Gurski, editor of The Voice teen section; Shannon Kirshner, photographer; Marcia Martinez, sports writer; Greg Pacelli, online systems coordinator; Jason Piscia, online editor; and Nick Rogers, arts and entertainment editor
(from public radio WUIS-WIPA) Kavitha Cardoza, reporter and Springfield bureau chief
(from The Journal) Emily Martin, editor-in-chief; Ashley Stoneking, assistant editor; Sandeep Balgarkshi, layout and design editor; Erin Sibley, business manager; and Jeremy Wilburn, advertising representative and layout specialist.

Support for the conference was provided by the Illinois Press Association, and by the UIS Provost’s Office, Division of Student Affairs and Administrative Services, and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

The Springfield area chapter of the Association for Women Journalists provided additional support in memory of the late AWJ co-founder and long-time SJ-R staff member Rosalynne Harty Gillespy.
