When the news doesn't seem positive at first

The news media have been reporting on a controversy launched by a proposed Campus Senate resolution asking for the termination of the UIS athletic director. Discussion on campus has been robust. The chancellor strongly opposes the resolution. The Academic Professional Advisory Committee unanimously opposes it. Almost two dozen people showed up at Thursday's open APAC meeting. Many spoke up vitriolically against the resolution, while others praised the athletic director. No one favored the resolution. Meanwhile, the faculty are having a closed session Monday to talk about it. Many student-athletes wish the resolution would go away, saying the recommendation to get rid of the athletic director would not help them. If it's "all about students" in this debate, as it should be, the resolution either will be rejected as is or just go away. About 40 people weighed in as of this morning with comments on the State-Journal Register's web site. I suspect it will be a weeklong discussion.

Chancellor's chat

I see where the UIS Journal has a rather negative slant on the "Chancellor's Chat," a new videotaped program that we show on the internal campus TV channel. It's also available on the UIS web site. Oh well. Think of it this way: the TV chat is a way for our top admininistrator to reach out, just as this blog is. Criticism is to be expected. But if you haven't seen one of these shows, you might want to check out an interview with Police Chief Don Mitchell about safety on campus.
