Basketball Pep Band & Jazz Band
The University of Illinois at Springfield employs two bands which perform at several Fall events and all home basketball games beginning in the Spring semester. Both bands include students, community members, faculty and staff musicians.
The Prairie Thunder Pep Band is a traditional collegiate athletic band comprised of brass, woodwind, percussion (drum set) and electronic instruments (guitar, bass, keyboard, etc.). The Prairie Thunder Jazz Combo is a 6 member jazz combo – 3 member rhythm section and 3 horns (any woodwind or brass).
Spirited musicians are invited to audition for both bands and all instruments are welcome! Members of there Prairie Thunder Jazz Combo are expected to demonstrate significant competence both reading written charts and creative improvisation.
20 paid positions are available in the Prairie Thunder Pep Band, but all qualified musicians will be invited to perform with the band. Musicians earning paid positions will be expected to be in attendance at all basketball games. Musicians invited to play with the band but not as a paid musician will remain competitive for paid positions should they become available. Prairie Thunder Pep Band musicians are paid minimum wage, amounting to approximately $24.00 per game. Prairie Thunder Jazz Combo musicians earn a flat rate of $75.00 per game.

Old Time Jam
The Old Time Jam Session takes place in room 33 of the Visual and Performing Arts Building at UIS on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month from 7:00 to 9:30 pm. The session is open to everyone, including those who play the fiddle, mandolin, banjo, guitar, and other instruments, as well as those who like to listen. This is an informal playing event with not preset program or tune list. If you are just learning, you are welcome to hang out, listen, follow along, ask questions, and/or observe those who have been at it a little while longer.
Additionally, there is a “slow jam” from 6:00 to 7:00 pm for those interested in learning new tunes at a slower pace.
