Music on the big stage, dancing, world music, and local history … all this and more is in store for UIS Music audiences this Spring!
Friday, April 9, 2010, at 7:30 p.m., UIS Music will present its annual Spring Showcase Concert ― with an exciting twist. This year’s performance will take place in the University of Illinois Springfield’s Sangamon Auditorium. Moving to the “big stage” will provide an exciting opportunity for our musicians and audience members to experience the diverse programming and sounds of the Chorus, Band, and Chamber Orchestra in a wonderful acoustic environment. The concert remains free and open to the public.
As always, donations benefiting the UIS Music Student Merit Award will be accepted.
Another exciting first will take place Saturday, May 1, 2010, with the UIS Chamber Orchestra venturing into the Springfield community to present a unique and exciting program of turn-of-the-century American dance orchestra music at the historic Dana-Thomas House.
About the Dana-Thomas House, Governor James R. Thompson’s Executive Order of 1983 states, “In 1902, Frank Lloyd Wright was commissioned to undertake the design and construction of a massive renovation of the Lawrence family home in Springfield, Illinois. The home was to be more than a mere residence ― it was to be a showcase. Upon its completion in 1904, the new edifice completely engulfed the original home. It immediately became a symbol of artistic and architectural excellence. It now stands as the finest example of the creativity and uniqueness characteristic of the Prairie School of Architecture.”
Popular dance orchestra strains dating to the early 20th century will again resonate inside this symbol of artistic and architectural excellence as the Chamber Orchestra and Dance Mistress Deborah Hyland bring local history to life in the Dana-Thomas House with an entertaining evening of music and dance. More information will be
available at our website soon!
