Merit Awards Fall 2008

The UIS Music program is pleased to announce this year’s Music Merit Award recipients, David Goldberg and Dane Thompson. This award is given to outstanding students that have gained the attention of UIS Music Program staff due to excellence in music and all around participation.

David GoldbergDavid is a UIS sophomore who is majoring in psychology. A resident of Crystal Lake, Illinois, David is from a musically inclined family. His mother plays guitar and his father plays clarinet. Both parents encouraged David’s music interest; including taking him to Bluegrass concerts. At the early age of 11, David first began to play the violin with his elementary school’s orchestra. He has been an enthusiastic violinist ever since. He is a member of the UIS Chamber Orchestra, and has participated in the UIS Old Time Music Jam Sessions. David says he enjoys the range of music he gets to play on campus: “From Duke Ellington’s ‘It Don’t Mean A Thing’ to German classical music.”

Dane ThompsonDane Thompson is a UIS sophomore majoring in Communications. A resident of Lake in the Hills, Illinois, he participates extensively in the UIS Music Program including playing in the Concert Band, the Pep Band, and serving as a student representative on the UIS Band Day 2008 committee. He plays multiple instruments, including baritone saxophone, sousaphone, and bass trombone. Dane plans to continue his musical activities after graduating from college.

David and Dane have demonstrated their enthusiasm in the UIS Music Program ensembles. Their exceptional ability with their instruments has gained them recognition by the UIS Music Department staff. Congratulations David and Dane!
