About the song and this contest:

The song was written by Dr. William Davis, professor emeritus at the University of Georgia, as part of a larger concert work titled Song and Spirit which was commissioned for the 40th Anniversary Celebration of the UIS Campus. Song and Spirit is a twelve minute concert work for wind band that was composed in an arch form with the school song excerpt at the center of the arch. It has been extracted here for use in this contest, and an arrangement of this section will be made with a new title and lyrics chosen from this contest!

The premiere of Song and Spirit will take place on November 12, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. in UIS’ Sangamon Auditorium, and the composer will be present. Immediately following the premiere, this excerpt will also be performed with the UIS Chorus singing the winning lyrics!

Lyrics may be of any nature. Your title and the nature of the lyrics can shape the meaning and function of this song. For example, it may be a “fight” song, a “spirit” song, a “campus” song, etc., and the text may influence the tempo and/or way in which it is performed.

Contest entries will be evaluated by a special committee comprised of UIS student, faculty, and staff members. All entries will remain anonymous until the winners are chosen.

All winning entries will be published as verses to the song, and this webpage will transform into an informational site about the new song, the contest, and the creative process.

How to Enter :

Format for submissions: Please submit (1) an e-mail to music@uis.edu with your lyrics in text format, AND (2) an electronic or paper copy of the Sheet Music with your lyrics written below the music. If you have difficulties reading music notation or writing your lyrics on the sheet music, do not let this stop you from participating. Text only entries will be accepted, and if there is any question about your intent, the committee will contact you.

Entries should include no more than two verses and must include a title.

Both formats (electronic text version and electronic or paper version with lyrics written under the music) are due by Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 10:00 a.m.

Winning entries will be announced at the premiere of Song and Spirit on November 12, 2010. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Sangamon Auditorium. Admission to the concert is free and open to the public.

All entries, upon submission to this contest, become the property of the University of Illinois Springfield.
