about the department

Master Teacher LeadershipThis Master of Arts in Teacher Leadership (MTL) online program is a vibrant, holistic, global master's degree and professional development program. Our graduates are known as teacher-leaders who excel in their teaching situations and non-administrative leadership roles in their organizations and communities. The program is recognized for its leading edge use of technology, its innovative presentations of practical knowledge and skills, and its ability to provide enhanced access to affordable quality education that exceeds state and national standards of excellence in education. MTL is also a valuable aid in preparing for National Certificatation (NBPTS).

MTL is designed specifically for educators in a classroom situation who wish to assume leadership roles in their environments, but who do not plan to pursue a Type 75 administration certification. Teacher Leadership graduates are eligible to apply for a Teacher Leadership Endorsement to be added to their active Illinois teaching certificate. The MTL program also serves professionals outside the field of education desiring to assume training or leadership roles within their professional setting whom are seeking to gain knowledge in the areas of technology, leadership, and teaching methodologies.

MTL courses are offered entirely online allowing busy professionals to advance their knowledge and careers at the convenience of their personal and professional demanding schedules. Courses are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, allowing students to choose the most convenient time to ìattendî class. Online course format introduces economical savings by omitting travel expenses and childcare expenditures. Online courses allow students the unique opportunity to learn and network with professionals globally. Students receive regular feedback on assignments and faculty members are easily accessible by e-mail or phone. Technical assistance is available through campus technical support system 7-days a week.

MTL coursework is conducted entirely online and is characterized by lectures, text reading, discussions, and projects, with emphasis on reflection and writing. All course projects are designed with a classroom application focus. Courses include studies in teaching, leadership, research, technology use, and a master's closure project. Program requirements allow students to individualize their program of study throughout a broad offering of elective courses focusing within the categories of school improvement, technology, special education, teachers and the law, middle school, subject-matter content, and National Board Certification.

Courses in MTL meet the requirement for teacher certificate renewal. Two courses facilitate master teaching certification by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Teacher Leadership graduates are eligible to apply for a Teacher Leadership Endorsement to be added to their active Illinois teaching certificate.
