The University of Illinois at Springfield's Visual Arts Gallery has become an important art venue for the Springfield region and regularly hosts exhibitions of emerging and established contemporary art. In September 2008, the University was one of three host venues for art exhibits commemorating the 1908 Springfield race riot.
The Progressive Reception featured artists including UIS associate professor Mike Miller, whose works were featured at the Illinois State Museum. Native American Visual and Performance Artist James Luna presented his multi-media project in the UIS Visual Arts Gallery.
