Dr. Hao Ma is a Professor of Management at the Department of Management, College of Business and Management, The University of Illinois at Springfield. He earned his Ph.D. in Strategic Management from The University of Texas at Austin in 1994.
His major research interests are multiple market competition and general competitive dynamics, innovation and the entrepreneurial process, strategic decision making and leadership style, as well as the causes and sustainability of competitive advantage. He has published some 50 articles in refereed journals and conference proceedings and has won numerous outstanding paper awards from American Society for Competitiveness and Eastern Academy of Management.
His research has been published or forthcoming in major scholarly journals such as Academy of Management Review, Journal of Business Venturing, and Journal of International Management, as well as in more practitioner-oriented journals such as Organizational Dynamics, Business Horizons, and Management Decision. His recent book on competitive advantage has been published by Peking University Press (in English) and by CITIC Press (in Chinese) to both critical claim and popular success.
His teaching interests are in the areas of Strategic Management, Entrepreneurship, and International Management. He regularly teaches the capstone Strategy course for undergraduates, MBAs, and Executive MBAs. His elective courses on Decision Making in Complex Organizations, Managing Hypercompetition, and Competition and Cooperation at the graduate level are also popular among students.
Prior to Joining UIS, Professor Ma had been at Bryant University since 1994, promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2000. He was a visiting scholar to Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in the 2001-2002 academic year. Since 2004, he also serves as a Professor of Management at China Center for Economic Research at Peking University in China.
