In 2009, he was the recipient of the Pearson Faculty Award. The Pearson Faculty Award recognizes a faculty member whose performance exemplifies UIS’ commitment to excellence in teaching.
Dr. O’Neal’s latest book is People in Organizations: What Every Manager Should Know About Human Resources, Boston: American Press, 2010. He also recently joined other UIS faculty members as one of the facilitators in the UIS/Illinois National Guard Training Collaboration.
After a successful business career (executive positions in Engineering, Sales, and, ultimately, Vice President of Human Resources at DICKEY-john Corporation), he completed his doctorate in Strategic Management in 1995, with a minor in International Business. As a UIS faculty member since 1992 he has taught Leadership and Strategy, Organization Design, Human Resource Management, and Business Ethics. In the UIUC MBA program he has taught Managing Change, and in the UIUC China Executive Leadership Program he regularly teaches Strategic Management, Human Resource Management, and Organization Design.
His research in various areas of strategic management — much of it on boards of directors — has been presented at a number of international conferences and published in professional journals including R&D Management, Long Range Planning, European Management Journal, Corporate Governance, Director’s Monthly, and the International Journal of IT Standards & Standardization Research . He has co-edited six volumes of strategic management papers (John Wiley & Sons), and has written a strategic management textbook, Managing Strategically for Superior Performance (2003, American Press) .
He has consulted with a variety of corporate, not-for-profit, and governmental organizations, primarily in the areas of strategic management, organization design, and human resource management. This includes advising, conducting seminars and workshops, and facilitating committees, teams, and focus groups. Dr. O’Neal served as a Scholar-in-Residence and Senior Member of the Governor’s Illinois Strategic Planning Advisory Council, from 1999-2002.
Dr. O’Neal believes that we can do almost anything that we set our minds to, if we dream big, and believe in ourselves. His 2007 publication, If Not Now, When? (AuthorHouse, 2007) is based on the theory that, although most of us are dreamers, not many of us actually achieve our dreams. It encourages people to start doing something about their dreams – not someday, but now – and provides a step-by-step process to guide them.
