Knowledge of a second language is an essential component in the formation of an educated person in this increasingly interconnected world. Real use of a second language will allow you to compete and cooperate both at home and in the international arena.
Students of the University of Illinois at Springfield are offered courses on campus in Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. Additional languages and related courses may be taken at one of the member institutions of the Central Illinois Foreign Language Consortium.
Our
foreign language curriculum is based on language instruction models
that emphasize speaking and understanding.
After completing the final semester of the four-course language sequence, you should be able to speak, understand, read, and write in cognate languages (French, German, or Spanish) at an intermediate-mid level, or at, in non-cognate languages (Chinese, Japanese or Russian), an intermediate-low level.
These ratings are based on the scale set by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).
If you wish to begin the study of a language, or if you have already begun the study of a language at UIS, and wish to continue in that language, please contact us for permission to enroll.
If you already have some knowledge of Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Japanese, Russian, or Spanish and wish to continue your study at UIS, you must take a language placement test .
