The Board of Higher Education approved a new bachelor’s degree for UIS called Management Information Systems.

Also known as MIS the major provides a balance of technical skills and business knowledge. Even though the Bachelors degree was just approved, Professor Rassule Hadidi, who is the Chair of the MIS Department, said the program has had a long history at UIS.

“Originally we wanted to offer it in the mid '80s when we offered our very successful [masters] in the MIS degree program,” he said.  “We decided that the rising demand for information systems and information technology professionals now is a good time to offer this degree program.”

Hadidi said this program allows for students to learn the fundamentals of business and aid them in their careers.

“The best managers today are those who understand the business and technology both and are able to apply the principles of business and technology to solve organizational problems,” he said.

The MIS masters program has a 100 percent placement record in the field for graduates. Hadidi said there are many career opportunities available for MIS graduates including work as business process analysts, hardware and software engineers, network systems analysts, computer support specialists, Web and electronic commerce applications developers, and database architects and administrators.

The curriculum for the B.S. in MIS consists of at least 123 semester credit hours from six groups of courses.  These include MIS and general education courses, foundation coursework, College of Business and Management core courses, and hours in Engaged Citizen Common Experiences, which is required for all UIS undergrads.
