A UIS student was shot and killed at a nearby gas station in the early morning hours of Sunday, Sept. 21. The victim, identified by Sangamon County Coroner Susan Boone as Linda Caldwell, 46, of Bloomington, was a transfer student and communications major at UIS.

According to the Springfield Police Department, the shooting happened before 2 a.m. at the Mobil Super Pantry at 2700 Stevenson Drive. Caldwell, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds, was taken to Memorial Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 2:17 a.m.

Police arrested LaDarryl C. House, 21, of Chicago, who reportedly was in the same vehicle as Caldwell and is said to have been arguing with the victim before the shooting. According to the State Journal-Register, House was on parole from the Illinois Department of Corrections for a 2006 case of attempted burglary and possession of a controlled substance. House was arrested Monday morning and the weapon believed to be used in the crime was also recovered.
