In the opening game of the McKendree Tournament, the UIS softball team won its first game of the season against Robert Morris, 2-0.
While their offense has struggled to put up points on the board at times, the Prairie Stars did not need many runs as Brianne Moeller turned in dominant pitching performance. Throwing a complete game shut-out, Moeller only gave up three hits, striking out four with no walks.
Moeller helped herself by adding an RBI double to the offensive side of her stat sheet. Her feat was matched by fellow teammate Nicole McAfee, who walked twice, stole three bases, and scored both of the runs.
After suffering multiple losses that included fourteen consecutive defeats to open the season and the resignations of head and assistant coaches, the Prairie Stars’ victory was a sign of the team’s resiliency. This sentiment was shared by Coach Mundell who commented, “I am extremely proud of how everyone has responded.”
He explained their strategy to success as he continued, “The team had a great week of practice after not playing since last Friday and was really able to execute some things we worked on. Brianne pitched great and our defense really came through and made some nice plays.”
The tournament’s competition included its host, McKendree, the Prairie Stars, and Robert Morris, a potential NAIA Top 25 team. Other opposition included Rodgers State, UIS’ challenger in their second tournament game. UIS fell to Rodgers State, 11-2. In the loss, McAfee continued her strong play with a 2-3 performance that included two singles and a run. She was supported by Brandy Allen who reached base twice with a single and scored a run.
The Prairie Stars look to build upon their recent achievement. They will have plenty of opportunities to do so as they have eight straight home games within seven days against conference foes McKendree, Columbia and Stephens College, and Missouri Baptist (April 8-April 15).
