Creatine, Dirka Dirka, and the Basket Brawlers all won championships in the open league, the rec men’s league, and the rec mixed league last Sunday. This year assistant director Karen Willard decided to separate competition, unlike in previous years.
“I thought that by separating this year’s intramural basketball program into Open and Rec Leagues, we provided a more skill based recreational competitive experience for the UIS participants,” she said. “I hope the participants thought these leagues were more equitable, fair, and more enjoyable by being more fun.”
In the open league Creatine advanced to the finals by beating the MBVs, while on the other end of the bracket the Massacre Began against DOOM with a final score of 61-58. The championship game came down to the last possession but a last second three was partially blocked and Creatine escaped with the upset and the championship 47-44.
In the men’s league rec league the BDE advanced to the finals by getting a forfeit win over the Lucky Heroes. Dirka Dirka received a bye as the top-seed in that division. Although both teams scored as many as 100 points during the regular season, the championship game was a low scoring contest, with Dirka Dirka edging out the BDE 33-30.
And finally in the mixed rec league the team of destiny, the Basket Brawlers, overcame all odds to secure the championship. Basket Brawler’s co-captain Zach Campbell said after the win, “We were always the underdog, having more females than males on our team.” The Basket Brawlers “battled through injury and sickness,” striving for one goal according to Campbell: free T-shirts.
“Overall, I was pleased with this year’s participation and thought the overall season went well,” Willard said.
Although the season went well, the assistant director always welcomes feedback from league members to improve next year’s intramural basketball competition.
