I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change

1975 was a good year. I am not sure that I know what was going on in world politics or the stock market, but I do know that it was the year that Rocky Horror Picture Show came out. And for that, it is a great year. What’s the fascination with Rocky Horror you ask? It has zombies, lasers, androgyny and it exudes campiness. To this day, it ranks among my most favorite movies along side Jesus Christ Superstar and Fivel Goes West. I can claim it as the sole reason why I enjoy musicals to this day.

And thus, last week I went to see “I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change” with the cool, comfortable knowledge that nothing could unseat my love of Rocky. Don't worry; this isn't one of the articles where I have a change of heart. But I will say that “I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change” helped to wash away some of the bitter taste that “Rent” left in its putrid wake. If there is ever evidence that the devil does actually exist, then “Rent” is probably the best thing you're going to get, next to a solid deductive argument. But I digress.

Historically, the musical is put on by a cast of four, and director Gus Gordan decided to go with precedent, casting himself Mary Jo Curry, Lori Ann Mitts and Jeff Prince for the various roles. “I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change” is stitched together through vignette with the overall theme of relationships, and this is where it has gained its reputation and appeal. It has something for anyone that has been in a relationship and knows their idiosyncrasies. In fact, the play's tagline is "Everything you have ever secretly thought about dating, romance, marriage, lovers, husbands, wives and in-laws, but were afraid to admit." But it also spans an entire lifetime, from the first date to the last day. For Gordon, the show has become a crowd favorite and it is the third time in two years that he has put together the show.

While it was running just for the weekend, do not worry. I bet within another year or two, Gordon will be putting it on again for another desirous crowd.
