Management department announced award winners
Three students majoring in Management at the University of Illinois at Springfield have received awards for excellence.
James L. Schweigert of Washington, Illinois, is the recipient of the department’s 2006 Highest Academic Achievement Award. Schweigert is a customer service representative for National Waterworks, Inc. in Washington. He will receive a monetary award.
Justin M. Jahanshir of Springfield is the recipient of The Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Award for 2006, presented annually to a student who best exemplifies managerial competence both in the classroom and in extracurricular activities. Jahanshir is an operations processor at Wells Fargo in Springfield. He will receive a year’s subscription to The Wall Street Journal.
David W. Polk of Chillicothe has been awarded the 2006 James C. Worthy Award for writing the best senior paper in the program. This honor, which includes a monetary award, pays tribute to the late James C. Worthy, a charter member of the management faculty. Each year’s winner is selected by the faculty who teach the course Strategic Management and Leadership. Polk is completing an internship at the Peoria County Human Resources Department.
Dr. Halter announced as director of Center for State Policy and Leadership
UIS has announced the appointment of Dr. Anthony P. Halter as executive director of the Center for State Policy and Leadership at UIS, following approval by the U of I Board of Trustees.
An award-winning teacher, Dr. Halter served on the faculty of the School of Social Work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for 15 years before retiring in 2002. He also has extensive experience in state government with the Department of Social Services in New York State and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare. He is an expert on state policy in the areas of welfare reform, health, unemployment, child welfare, and homelessness and education and has provided invited testimony to the Illinois and Michigan legislatures on welfare policy.
In announcing the appointment, UIS Provost Harry Berman said, "Dr. Halter's supervisory and administrative experience and knowledge of academia and state government will be great assets to the center." Dr. Berman noted that Dr. Halter is well known and respected by the staff and faculty in the center after having collaborated with them in the late 1990s on a study of clients of the Temporary Aid to Needy Families program.
Pardie to fill post of Associated Vice Chancellor for Graduate Education
Professor Lynn Pardie has been selected as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Graduate Education and Research. In that capacity, Lynn will have broad responsibilities for oversight of and advocacy for graduate education, for research administration, and for advancing faculty and student scholarly activities.
Pardie comes to this position with an extensive record of accomplishment in leading complex collaborative activities such as the Task Force on the Center for Teaching and Learning. She has also been a strong contributor to important campus initiatives, including the Assessment Task Force and the General Education Working Group. She is a long-time member of the Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects and for the past year and a half has chaired that committee.
Pardie is a clinical psychologist and a tenured member of the psychology program. In spring 2005, she received the Faculty Excellence Award in recognition of her accomplishments in teaching, scholarship, and service.
Brookens now offers more fiction and DVDs in its collection
Brookens Library has stocked its Browsing Collection with fiction of all genres and award-winning films in time for post-exam and summer recreation.
In response to requests for more fiction and DVDs in the collection, Brookens will now regularly add novels and films that can be enjoyed by faculty, staff, and students.
Bring your I-card and pick up something from the new books or browsing collection. New additions include “City of Falling Angels” by John Berendt, author of the bestseller “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.” Other new titles include “The Last Templar” by Raymond Khoury, “Good Omens” by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett and “Zorro” by Isabel Allende. Films titles include the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, Yasujiro Ozu's “Tokoyo Story” and “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Whenever you need a break from your studies, come to Brookens Library to find a good book to read or film to watch.
