The State and University Employees Combined Appeal, allowing state and university employees to donate to 12 charities representing over 2,000 agencies, will host a Charity Fair Nov. 2 in the PAC. Participants will have a chance to meet representatives from a wide variety of charities and to register to win prizes.

UIS professor Charles Schweighauser will present a lecture on “Einstein's Insights: How They Shaped Our Modern View of the Universe” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 3 in the Carnegie Room at the Lincoln Library, 326 S. The African-American studies program at UIS will host “In the Mix: Cross-Dialogues Regarding Hip-Hop Culture” Nov. 4-5 at Springfield 's Southeast High School and on the UIS campus. Activities will include panel presentations, breakout discussions, performances and an awards banquet. UIS and Southeast students, faculty and staff are admitted free to all speakers and panel discussions. Registration is required. $40/per person, $25 to students with valid ID. Sponsored by African-American studies, Sankofa, Women's Center, Capital Scholars, Speakers Awards Committee and Student Affairs. UIS Theater will present “Oedipus the King” at 8 p.m. Nov. 4-5 and 11-12 and at 2 p.m. Nov. 6 and 13 in the Studio Theatre. “Digital Environments,” works by visual arts chair Michael Miller, will be on display at the Visual Arts Gallery through Nov. 23. The gallery will host an evening with the artist beginning with a reception at 4:30 p.m. The events are free and open to the public. The Visual Arts Gallery is located in room 201 of the Health and Sciences Building on the UIS campus. The Division of Student Affairs at UIS is sponsoring a Foreign and Independent Film Series at 7 p.m. Friday nights this fall in Brookens Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public. Films to be shown include: “Kontroll,” Nov. 4; “The Sea Inside,” Nov. 11 and “March of the Penguins,” Nov. 18.

UIS' annual literary journal, The Alchemist Review, is now accepting submissions of fiction, poetry, prose, artwork and photography. Fiction must be less than 3,500 words. Send submissions to English department GA Ed Myers at eng-ga@uis.edu.
