UIS foreign and independent film series
The Division of Student Affairs at UIS is sponsoring an Independent and Foreign Film Series on Friday nights this spring. All films will begin at 7 p.m. in Brookens Auditorium. Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.
Films include: The Holy Land – Feb. 17 and 18; Osama – Feb. 25; Dogville – March 4; The Corporation - March 25; I’m Going Home – April 1; Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring – April 8; Bride and Prejudice – April 15; Motorcycle Diaries – April 22.

2005-2006 RA Selection information
Application packets will be available Monday, Jan. 24 for those interested in being an RA. All areas of Housing need to be staffed for the 2005-2006 academic year. Deadline for application is Feb. 23, 2005.

Career fair count down
Beginning Jan. 24 Career Services will present five weeks of informational displays to prepare the campus community for the Feb. 25 career fair. The displays will be located in the lower PAC and will change each week.
Handouts will be available at the displays.
Topics being presented include:
Jan. 24 - 28 “What is a career fair and why go?”
Jan. 31 – Feb. 4 “Preparing your resume and cover letter for distribution at the Career Fair”
Feb. 7 – 11 “What to do before the Career Fair”
Feb. 14 – 18 “What you should do during the Career Fair”
Feb. 21 – 25 “What to do after the Career Fair”

The Vagina Monologues to be presented at UIS
The Women’s Issues Caucus at UIS will host a production of Eve Ensler’s award-winning play “The Vagina Monologues” at 8 p.m., Saturday, March 5, in the Studio Theatre.
The event is presented as part of the V-Day 2005 Worldwide/College Campaign, a global movement designed to raise money and awareness for organizations that work to stop violence against women and girls.
The audience is invited to attend a pre-show discussion with cast members and a reception following the performance.
Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 31, at Sangamon Auditorium Ticket Office. Cost is $25 for the general public. Student tickets are $11.25 (UIS), $11 (Lincoln Land Community College), $10 (SIU School of Medicine) and $15 (all other students). UIS to offer “Music and Computers” workshop
The music program at UIS will host a six-week workshop on computer music applications that is open to all musicians in the community. The workshops are scheduled to run from Feb. 9 - March 16. Meeting times are Wednesdays from 6 until 9 p.m. in room 208 of the Health and Sciences Building.
Area jazz musician and songwriter Brian Pryor will lead the workshop, which will focus on some of the new plug and play MIDI (musical instrument digital interface) and audio software.

UIAA Collegiate membership program
Join the alumni association for a free career program that is available for all UIS students, alumni, faculty and staff on Thursday, Feb. Feb 24, 2005.
Julie Hays from the University of Illinois Alumni Association’s Career Center in Chicago will be presenting a free workshop, “Comprehensive Job Search Strategies” from 4:45 – 5:45 p.m. in the PAC, conference room C. She will include tips on how to get the most out of a job fair.
The UIS Career Center job fair will be Friday, Feb. 25 in the PAC.

UIS professor publishes book on Symbolist writer
Rosina Neginsky, a faculty member at UIS, will sign copies of her new book, “Zinaida Vengerova: In Search of Beauty. A Literary Ambassador between East and West,” at 5:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, at the Springfield Art Association, 700 N. Fourth St., Springfield.
A reception will follow; both the signing and reception are free and open to the public.

UIS to present Black and Gay Film Series
Students against Sexual Stereotypes and Inequality, in conjunction with the course Sexual Orientation and Public Policy, will sponsor a Black and Gay Film Series, Thursdays in February. All films will be shown at noon in conference room E of the PAC. The films are free and open to the public.
The series is presented in observance of Black History Month and explores the lives of gay and lesbian African-Americans. A question-and-answer session will follow each film.
Films to be presented include Living with Pride: Ruth Ellis at 100 on Feb. 17 and Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin on Feb. 24.

“Merge” is next exhibit at UIS Visual Arts Gallery
Photographers Bea Nettles and Fern Logan will display their works in the joint exhibit "Merge," Feb. 14 - March 10.
An Artists’ program and reception Thursday, March 3 will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will feature talks by the artists, a performance by faculty member and poet Marcellus Leonard, and a song by UIS alumna Denise Yates. The program, reception, and exhibit are located in the Visual Arts Gallery and are free and open to the public.
The exhibit is presented in conjunction with Black History Month and Women’s Heritage Month.

Taste of UIS to feature panel of WUIS alumni
The University of Illinois Alumni Association at UIS will present “How UIS/WUIS Prepared Me for the World,” the first program in this spring’s Taste of UIS: Distinguished Faculty/Alumni Lunchtime Lecture Series, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, at Maldaner’s Upstairs, 222 South Sixth St., Springfield.
Reservations are required and should be made no later than Wednesday, Feb. 16.
The second program, on Wednesday, March 23, will present Margot Duley, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, who will speak on “International Women’s Movements a Century Ago: Buried History, Repeated History.”
The third program, on Tuesday, April 26, will feature UIS alumna and assistant professor of English Barbara Burkhardt discussing her new book, William Maxwell: A Literary Life.
Each program includes a buffet lunch. Cost for each is $18 per person, $13 for Alumni Association members and their guests.

UIS presentation will examine “Economic Consequences of the Tsunami”
“The Economic Consequences of the Tsunami,” a presentation by Dr. Baker Siddiquee will be help at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, in the PAC conference room C/D. The event is sponsored by the Capital Scholars program and is free and open to the public.
Help wanted: Students to coordinate a state-wide student lobby day
UIS students are needed to help coordinate all aspects of the Lobby Day which will bring students from colleges and universities all over the state to lobby their representatives and April 11.
Lobby Day is funded and supported by the Office of Student Volunteers and Service Learning, Illinois Issues, UIS Student Government Association, the McCormick-Tribune Foundation and Illinois Campus Compact.
